Tianjin is one of the four municipalities directly under the PRC Central Government. It was also one of the first PRC coastal cities open for international trade since 1984. Tianjin has a total area of 11,919 sq. km. and a population of 10.75 millions. It is located about 120 km from Beijing and is an important transportation channel to northern part of China as well as North America and Europe. Besides, the municipality has been discovered to have 20 types of valuable mineral resources. The major industries in Tianjin include automobile, electronics, electrical and mechanical machinery, oil & petrochemical, building material, light industry, food, biomedical and medical equipment. As a matter of fact, Tianjin is going to become a modernized international coastal city and an important economic center in Northern China under the Eleventh Five Year Plan executed by the PRC Central Government.

Binhai New Area (Tianjin New Coastal District)

The Binhai New Area has a total area of 2,270 sq. km. and a coastline of 153 km. It has a population of 1.4 million. The Binhai New Area consists of 3 functional zones (Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), Tianjin Port and its Free Trade Zone), 3 administrative districts (Tanggu, Hangu and Dagang), and parts of Dongli and Jinnan. It has a favorable geographical location, rich natural resources, a concentration of talents in science and technology, a solid industrial foundation, convenient transportation and communications. A brief description on each district is provided below :

Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA)
TEDA was founded by the PRC State Council on December 6, 1984 to be one of the first national development areas in China. Based on the economic statistics provided by the PRC Ministry of Commerce, the major economic indices of TEDA has been on the top among those of 53 national development areas in China for years. Since the entrance of Motorola in 1993, multinational enterprises (MNEs) started their investment in TEDA. There are currently over 200 MNEs in TEDA with a total investment of USD 6 billion (accounting for 70% of the total investment in TEDA). Nowadays, TEDA is the center for manufacturing and processing industries in Northern China and the base for advanced technology.

Tianjin Port
Tianjin Port is one of the 20 largest and busiest ports in the world, having 30 shipping lines traveling to 300 harbors in 170 countries. It is the biggest artificial port in China and significant in international trade. The Port has reached a cargo throughput of 300 million tons and 7 million TEUs in 2007.

Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone
Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone was established in 1991 and is the only and the largest free trade zone in Northern China with the extensions of Tianjin Airport Industry Park and Tianjin Airport International Logistics Zone. It is an international logistics center which provides the best investment environment with the most efficient services and the lowest costs.

Tanggu
Tanggu is an important coastal city in Northern China with rich resources in Bohai area. It has about 90 types of raw material for petrochemical production, an oil reserve of 1,900 million tons and a natural gas reserve of 70,200 million cubic meters. The major industries are mineral production, sea transport, ship manufacturing, oil and petrochemical industries.

Hangu
Hangu was devastated by the severe earthquake in Tangshan in 1976. With the investment of RMB 590 million by the Government, the city’s basic reconstruction work had been completed in 1985. In recent years, the Government’s investment on infrastructure, building and construction has reached RMB 2 billion which is a historical record in terms of the number and size of the projects.

Dagang
Dagang was established in November 1979. The main assets of the district would be oil and petrochemical productions with an oil reserve of 887 million tons and a natural gas reserve of 36.05 billion cubic meters.

Dongli
Dongli has a significant advantage of its location, being the neighborhoods of TEDA, Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone and the advanced technological development area along the Jingjintang Expressway.

Jinnan
Since the execution of the Eleventh Five Year Plan in 2006, Jinnan has achieved great result in every aspect such as agriculture, real estate construction, technology and industrial development.
